How much aggregate will I require?
The amount of aggregate you require is governed by the area you wish to cover and to what depth. Un-compacted Cloburn aggregates weigh 1.4 tonnes per cubic metre. Therefore if you wish to apply them at a 50mm depth one tonne will cover 14 square metres. 50mm is the normal depth for a driveway. For pedestrian pathways 25mm is normally sufficient in which case 1 tonne will be sufficient to cover approximately 28 square metres.
How much Firechip will I require?
Compacted Firechip weighs 2 tonnes per cubic metre. The minimum recommended depth for vehicle traffic is 75mm which means that 1 tonne will cover 7 square metres. For pedestrian traffic 50mm deep is sufficient allowing 1 tonne to cover 10 square metres. For top dressing an existing pathway where there is no additional load bearing requirement much lighter rates of applications are possible.
What is the best way to lay my granite aggregate?
First of all it is important that your new aggregates are not wasted by laying them on an unsuitable surface. Loose chippings must be laid on a firm surface and if necessary separated from underlying soil. This was traditionally achieved by the use of plastic sheeting but nowadays permeable terram is much better.
