Track Ballast

Link-up Logo - click to view UK Rail Supplier Qualification SchemeFrom supplying a minor local rail siding with track ballast in 1982, Cloburn Quarry completed the successful start up of Kingmoor LDC (loading distribution centre) near Carlisle. We developed this railhead transfer site for long term use by Network Rail, and we are currently operating a similar LDC at Millerhill, near Edinburgh, for the supply of Track Ballast, with Link-up approval. Here are the proven features of using track ballast from Cloburn Quarry, compared to typical aggregate properties of known suppliers, and the benefits gained from using our superior track products.

Strongest track ballast available

This ensures a longer life span of the material, therefore less maintenance is required and less “down time” is needed on our rail transport system.

Lightest track ballast available –

Cloburn material is typically 20% lighter than other known track products. In simple terms, this means you simply get more product for your money. This equates to huge financial savings, no matter the size or nature of the job.

Least abrasive track ballast available –

Due to the very smooth surface texture of our track ballast, the following benefits are also very important in the life span of the product. Firstly, there is less abrasion on the concrete sleeper which prolongs the life of this expensive commodity. The flat surface of the stone also ensures that no oil or other contaminants can penetrate the rock which could quickly weaken a lesser product. This also helps the cleaning of the material when it is reclaimed from the rail track, to then be re-sold as a recycled material.

Ballast from Coburn Quarry being loaded at Millerhill LDCDue to our state of the art production techniques, we are also able to produce a track ballast that has the ideal shape. Our product is very cubical in comparison to other suppliers, which enables the track to be bedded more securely. The product is also very uniform in size which enhances the drainage system of any track, allowing surface water to drain very quickly. The uniform size also means there are less smaller particles in the material, therefore eliminating environmentally unfriendly airborne dust.

Stoneblower Aggregate

Stoneblower AggregateWe have been involved with the British Railways Board since 1982, working on producing an aggregate suitable for inserting into track beds for remedial purposes, as a result, Stoneblower aggregate was developed.

This material is produced to a very precise and exact specification. The size of the material is critical to the success of this particular application as the aggregate is blown through small pipes on the Stoneblower machine. The machine then travels along the track, whilst profiling the track bed and measuring the amount of material required to fill any voids, it then fills those voids perfectly with our Stoneblower aggregate.

The acceptance of this material as superior to all others has been recognised by Infrastructure Maintenance Contractors throughout the UK.
